ANNIE WRIGHT is a trailblazing music promoter and film publicist whose 50-year career has taken her from Avalon Beach, Australia to the heart of the international music and film industries.
Breaking barriers in a male dominated profession, she worked with RCA Records Australia, Mushroom Records and OZ Records in Los Angeles, helping promote artists including David Bowie, Lou Reed, John Denver, Dolly Parton, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Joe Walsh of The Eagles, The Police, Dire Straits, Crosby Stills and Nash (CSN), Devo alongside Australian icons Renee Geyer, Marcia Hines, Air Supply, Paul Kelly, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Russell Morris, Mental as Anything, Spilt Enz, Kevin Borich Express and Hunters & Collectors.
At RCA Records, Annie was instrumental in propelling ABBA’s meteoric rise in Australia between 1974 and 1980, helping turn them into one of the most remarkable music phenomenons the country has ever seen. Annie became a trusted confidante of the group, working closely with them during their 1976 promotional visit, and again on their triumphant 1977 concert tour. The following year in 1978, they invited Annie to join them on their private island — a personal gesture of thanks.
Annie was featured in the highly successful ABC TV documentary ‘Bang A Boomerang’ in 2013. The documentary told the inside story of ABBA’s success in Australia, and how it echoed and reverberated into world stardom, marking the birth of a supergroup.
In Hollywood & back home, she expanded into film publicity, working with luminaries such as Robert De Niro, Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway, Ed Harris, Jack Thompson, Bryan Brown, Russell Crowe, Joan Chen, Greta Scacchi, Tom Berenger, Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey.
Renowned for handling the toughest personalities with diplomacy and determination, she earned the nickname ‘She Does Difficult,’ which inspired her memoir. Beyond entertainment, Annie became a prominent advocate in local politics, leading the ‘Aussies Against Fracking’ movement in New South Wales and helping drive the campaign against coal seam gas (CSG) supported by Leo Sayer’s video anthem ‘No Fracking Way’.
Guided by the example of her mother and anchored in her faith, Annie brings the same warmth, honesty, insight and humour that defined her career to the page, sharing behind-the-scenes stories with candour and heart.
